Mr. Herbert Hoover
President U. S. A.

Dear Sir.

I am writing you a letter addressed to Mrs. Hoover in order that you may get it personally. I beg that you read it with your undivided attention of which I will appreciate.

I am struggling lifes battle with the intention of reaching some worthy destination and I know no better path than by your highness. Mr Hoover dear sir, I am a graduate of the Lynchburg High School and have one year credit in Howard University Washington DC.

I beg that you will allow me a chance to relate a little of my lifes history. and intentions.
When I graduated from High school my intentions was to finish college and medicine. My career was broken due to my fathers death which forced me to care for a mother and younger brothers. I have never given up all hope of doing well for I believe as long as god reins and I try to do right I shall win.

I must say that I am of a respectful family and have reference to that by some of the leading business and professional men of my birth community. Hon Fred Harper and Mrs Fred Harper who is the grand daughter of the late Senator Daniel can give my families record, their address is 201 Federal st Lynchburg Va. Appleman jewelry store 823 Main St Lynchburg Va.
Bacchus & Reid Pharmacy 901 5th St Lynchburg Va. My reason for writting you is that maybe you might have a position I might fill by appointment. I shall appreciate any encouragements coming from you. Thanking you in advance for your kind attention

I remain yours truly

Bernard Weldon Hayes.

My dear Sir:

Your letter of July 5th to the President has been received, and I am sorry that I do not know of any vacancy to which you could be appointed. Practically all appointments to Government positions are made after examination by the Civil Service Commission. If you desire to pursue the matter further I suggest that you get in communication with the Commission here in Washington with a view to securing information regarding examination.

Sincerely yours,

LAWRENCE RICHEY
Secretary to the President.
