Hoover Dam

Controversy over Naming the Dam

INTERVIEW WITH EARL BEHRENS
By Raymond Henle
August 1, 1971

MR. HENLE: That was the occasion when he spoke at Glendale and promised support to Roosevelt, wasn’t it?

MR. BEHRENS: Yes. Then we went on to Nevada to inspect what is now the Hoover Dam. In fact at that time the tunnels were finished and the next day after we were there they blew off the cofferdam and let the water go through the tunnels. We rode through with Mr. Hoover on the bus--through one of the tunnels on the California side. First it was called Boulder Dam because Ickes wouldn’t call it Hoover Dam. It really was Black Canyon--it was never known as Boulder until Ickes called it that. Years later, finally, they recognized Mr. Hoover.
