Letters

During their years in the White House, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover received thousands of letters from Americans in all walks of life. Some of the letters were from ordinary citizens requesting personal aid or assistance from the Federal Government. These letters were most often referred to local social service agencies. Other letters were from businessmen and bankers seeking to influence Hoover's policies on fighting the worst economic crisis in American history. What follows is an assortment of letters from the American people to the Hoovers between 1929 and 1933. These letters constitute a sense of the hope and despair that gripped the nation during the worst economic crisis in American history.
