Administrative Programs

The Great Depression is generally considered the worst economic crisis in American history. In response to this catastrophe, Herbert Hoover developed a myriad of administrative programs and policies. Each was intended to relieve the suffering of the American people and get the nation back to work. In fact, Herbert Hoover spent more money on social and economic programs during his presidency than all the presidents before him combined. But many Americans were impatient and criticized Hoover for not doing enough to fight the Depression. Included in this section are an assortment of documents that indicate what Hoover was doing and how the nation responded to his programs.
